World boxing champs underway in rainy Barbados — JamaicaObserver.com

by Jonathan

A new chapter in World sport was ushered into reality, when the sixth Women’s World Boxing Championships opened on a rainy Thursday just outside the Barbados capital.

It’s the first-ever Olympic qualifying event for female pugilists, as they prepare to join their male counterparts for the first time in the Olympic arena.

The Wildey gymnasium at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex provided the backdrop, as more than 250 boxers from 65 countries begin their road to London 2012.
