The Barbados Sandy Lane Gold Cup

by Summer

Back in 1982 this prestigious horse race was known as The Barbados Gold Cup, until the title sponsorship was taken over by Sandy Lane Hotel in1997. The Sandy Lane Gold Cup is certainly recognised as one of the most important and exciting events on the Barbados racing calendar. This horse racing event is watched by thousands of people both at the historic Garrison Savannah as well as from home.

On race day, the atmosphere at the Garrison is frenzied. Spectators arrive at the Savannah very early in the morning to erect tents on the grounds and to ensure they get the best seat in the house. People are known to park from the night before just to get a “good place”, so there may not be much parking directly around the Savannah the next morning. The grounds are packed with stalls selling food and drinks, and there is always plenty for children to do while their parents consume a few drinks and watch the races.

This year, the The Barbados Sandy Lane Gold Cup race is set for March 2nd and will run second to last on the day. Before the actual race, there is a grand parade with performances by the Royal Barbados Police Band and dancers. Normally well choreographed, you won’t want to miss it!

Below we have included some useful information on this event, as well as a few fun facts about The Barbados Gold Cup race records.
