Pilates is a series of movements and exercises designed by Joseph Pilates to assist the body with muscular imbalances and bad postural habits that we are either born with or develop over time through our daily routines.

Pilates is the perfect antidote to the pressures and strains of modern living. If you play a sport regularly, work in front of a computer and/ or do a lot of driving, Pilates will improve your life.

I take regular lessons from Lana Sealy, a very experienced and respected Pilates instructor working locally in Barbados.

Lana orginally trained as a dancer at the New World School of the Arts, after graduation she worked professionally as a member of the Repertory Understudy Group with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, New York. During her time in the States, Lana started studying Pilates, a natural fit for a full-time dancer. Lana now has several Pilates qualifications including one from the Kane School of Core Integration.

After returning to Barbados in 2007, Lana now teaches Dance and Pilates at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination as well as Surfside Wellness Centre and Artsplash Barbados, focusing on alignment, rehabilitation, injury prevention and toning.

Last year, Lana attended classes in New York focusing on Pilates for people with Osteoporosis. In July she travelled on a luxury yacht throughout the Mediterranean as the Pilates instructor on board and in September she returned to the vessel by special request for the season in the South of France.

Lana is currently pursuing teaching hours towards her Pilates Method Alliance Exam for her accreditation as a Master Pilates Instructor.

Pilates can be used as a tool to strengthen the core, realign anatomical structures to assist with rehabilitation, as well as prevent injuries and pin point muscular imbalances or just to tone and develop long lean muscles.

Special modifications are made for people with arthritis, osteoporosis, spinal injuries, pregnancy and many more.

Classes are done in six week sessions and are conducted in small groups to ensure individual attention.

Pilates is good for athletes and anyone with injuries or just looking to get in shape and tone up.

Classes are open to both men and women!
