The Barbados Defence Force changing of the Sentry

This tradition dates back to the 1700 and features retired members of various military units marching past the sentry post at the Clock Tower. The ceremony is conducted every Friday, at the Main Guard in the Garrison Historic Area starting promptly at 11:50 AM and ending when the clock strikes midday.

Caribbean food and beverage expo 2012Caribbean Food and Beverage Expo 2012

The Caribbean Food and Beverage Expo is an annual trade-show which allows local and regional business to showcase their products. In addition to over 25 specialised bakery and pastry exhibits this year, there are also a number of beverage suppliers that will be on show as well.

Transport Board bus tourTransport Board Sunday Scenic Bus Tour

This is an inexpensive and relatively comfortable way to see portions of Barbados in a very informal atmosphere. Tickets are available from the change booths at Fairchild Street or Princess Alice Terminals in Bridgetown, and the Speightstown Terminal in Speightstown. Pack a picnic basket and meet at Independence Square at 2:00 pm. This bus tour travels a different route each Sunday, making 2 or 3 stops along the way. Various routes are available and occasionally the tours do not run. Check here for updated info.

Historic tourA Tour of the Garrison Historic Area

Bridgetown and its Historic Garrison have recently been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. You travel in an air-conditioned tour bus with knowledgeable multi-lingual tour guides and along the way, you will stop at the following historic sites:

  • George Washington House & the rediscovered Garrison Tunnels built in 1820s
  • The National Armoury
  • The Barbados Museum Gift Shop
  • The Changing of the Sentry

Hike BarbadosHike Barbados

Hike Barbados is a Barbados Nation Trust organised free hiking group. On these hikes you will encounter cane fields, gullies, tropical forests and coastal communities.

These fun beach volleyball matches take place at the popular Brandons beach (the one on Spring Garden highway which is located on the outskirts of the capital city of Bridgetown on the island’s South West coast. This is a must go and see event!

J24 Race BarbadosJ/24 Barbados Match Racing Championship

This sailing event in Barbados is well subscribed, and followed enthusiastically by locals and visiting guests. Through an elimination process, each team progresses from a round robin to a series of semifinals and finals in order to decide a champion. Set up a picnic at your favorite beach spot and enjoy a day in the sun and some great boat racing!

Barbados Junior Surfing ClubBJSC Burkies Junior Surfing Championship — Round 3

Founded by Alan Burke, this Junior surfing Barbados competition is a series of three surfing events catering to juniors. The Championship is under the auspices of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club (BJSC). Depending on conditions for that day, this surf comp could be held at one of the following locations: Brandons (the one by the Garrison Savannah or next door to Needhams Point), Soup Bowl or Parlour in Bathsheba, Long Beach, Surfers Point or Silver Sands.

The Barbados Rally Club Mud Dogs Safari Championship —October MudFest

This form of motor sport has been part of the club from the inception, some fifty years ago. The format has been slightly tweaked to focus on four wheel drive off-road vehicles with “special stages” of the past being replaced by challenges which test driver and vehicle ability while manoeuvring through rugged terrain at a much slower speed. The navigation emphasis has remained unchanged and sparks keen competition year after year.

Games will be played at the Sir Garfield Sobers Complex (Carnival Headquarters) which is Astro Turf; U.W.I which is Astro turf; Banks Brewery Sports Club which is a grass pitch; Kensington Oval (one of the world greatest cricket arenas providing outstanding natural grass pitches) and Wanderers Cricket Club, which is a natural grass pitch. Whether you are holding on to a hockey stick, a glass of punch or a beach towel, you can be assured of a wonderful hockey holiday in Barbados with the World Vintage Hockey team. There will be mens, womens and Mixed teams, categorised by age into 35-45, 45 and over, and Mixed groupings.

A Special Stage Rally is run over sections of tarmac or loose surface roads, which are not public roads, but which are joined by linking sections which are public roads. The public roads forming the linking sections must be closed for the duration of the rally.

Barbados MuseumThe Barbados Museum and Historical Society Ole Time tour

These outings are conducted by the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, and are an island bus tour that explores the history and culture of Barbados. Knowledgeable museum personnel are on hand to provide insight into the places visited. Each trip is preceded by a 45-minute tour of the Museum which provides visitors with a sense of the island’s history and heritage. Races at the GarrisonBarbados Turf Club Third Horse Racing Season — Day 1

Thoroughbred Horse Racing in Barbados has taken place at the Garrison Savannah for over 150 years. The Barbados Turf Club organizes three seasons of racing per year. These seasons run from January to April, May to August and from October to December, normally every other Saturday.  There are usually nine races per day

Barbados surfing associationIndependence Pro and Junior Pro Surfing Championship 2012

There are two separate competitions: The Independence Pro consisting of Men’s Open and Women’s Open competitions with competitors expected from many countries including regional and extra-regional; The Soup Bowl Junior Pro with Girls Under 18 and Boys Under 12, under 16 and under 21 competitions. Both competitions are hosted by the Barbados Surfing Association. The Soup Bowl is rated one of the top ten surfing locations in the world.

Independence Day: November 30th marks Barbados’ independence from British rule. Most shops are closed for the day because it is a bank holiday so it’s a good idea to stock up the day for, pack a picnic basket and spend the day with the locals on the beach!
