It’s that time of year again, when visitors and returning nationals from near and far flock to Barbados to witness or participate in the island’s annual Crop Over celebrations!
Last night (well really this morning), thousands gathered in various bands throughout Bridgetown to participate in the popular mud and paint foreday morning event called J’ouvert. I’m pretty sure some are still chipping down Spring Garden as I write this at 8:00 AM. (Photo: Mix Nutz Foreday/J’ouvert by Luke DeFreitas)
After the streets are cleaned up from all of the festivities this morning, Spring Garden will host Bridgetown Market. The typical scene along the highway is row upon row of drinks, food and craft stalls, stretching from the bottom of Spring Garden highway (by Kensington Oval), all the way North to Brighton Beach. You can either pack a cooler with ice and spend the day in one spot or stroll down empty handed and choose your pickings from the range of rum shop stalls on display. Oh, there’s no admission.
Today (Saturday August 3rd), is also THE day of one of my favourite Kadooment parties: Bliss. This Summer Edition event held by the fellas at Esquire Entertainment takes place this year at Golden Grove Plantation House in St. Philip. Get ready to be knocked off your feet with food stalls from all over the world, fully equipped drinks bars and great tunes by a number of DJ’s including Private Ryan & Jon Doe. A ticket costs $230 BBD but the price tag is well worth it considering the amount and quality of food and bevies you have access to from 3 PM until 10 PM! Definitely one of the most organised and well executed parties I went to in 2012! (Photo: Lewego.com)
Although you may think, ah yes Sunday, a day to rest before Monday’s jump up, many revellers will be boarding various day cruises and probably ending up at the Harbour Lights Beach party or Cohobblopot late into the night. Then finally, it’s the day everyone’s been anticipating; Monday August 5th, Grand Kadooment Day! If you’re not already in a band, head down to Spring Garden Highway and watch the bands in their magnificent colours, chip down the road. (Photo: Harbour Lights by Kirk Watkins)
Sadly, I will not be attending any events this year, on account of being 9 1/2 months pregnant! 🙂 But, next year I’ll be back.
